The sheen of oil, the light dancing off the surface…. at times remarkable, at times disgusting. At times just magical.
There were times I would follow oil slicks down the waterway, watching them writhe and shift with the flow of the water. It was a performance put on by the water spirits, creating its own dance of shapes along the waterway. What have I seen? The continent of Africa in oil, the foot of Hermes with a wing on the ankle, a woman’s figure, and a grouping of dinosaurs are just a few. It was what my imagination captured in the moving water.
There were times I couldn’t stand the smell but the image was just so compelling. In the sixth street basin, you could feel like you entered Jurassic Park. The contaminants ruled in its dead end, making the surface of the water seem almost solid. I took a photo there that looked like the planet earth from space. Many of my photographs are what I perceived in a scene. But they were always what was there.
