Mark D Phillips has photographed and reported on the Gowanus Canal for 35 years. Best known for his 9/11 image, Satan in the Smoke, he discovered the waterway in 1989 and immediately fell in love with the area.

Abstract

The Gowanus Canal is a living organism with tidal currents that pushed the oil slicks and coal tar, creating a mosaic of color across its surface. There were also the moments of serenity when the water became a mirror, sometimes clearly, many times creating bursts of color that dazzled.
