A portion of each sale will be donated to the Farmington River Watershed Association. In April 2024, American Rivers released their Most Endangered Rivers list and the Farmington River is on it. Eight miles upstream from where the Farmington River joins the Connecticut River is the Rainbow Dam, owned by Stanley Black & Decker. This small, poorly maintained hydropower dam has been in operation since the early 20th century, but due to a quirk of law, it has no federal oversight which has allowed it to damage the river for decades. Let’s all help keep the river clean. We don’t want a Superfund site like the Gowanus Canal.
Description
Mark D Phillips discovered the Farmington River in Simsbury, CT, as a perfect photographic location with an ecosystem that features Eastern Painted Turtles, Blue Herons, Green Herons. Goslings, and physical beauty.
As a photojournalist, Phillips traveled the world documenting and creating images that captivate the viewer. When the pandemic took that away, Phillips began kayaking on the Farmington River as his solo activity. Exploring the river and its tributaries became a remarkable journey, finding places that seem nearly untouched by humans. They exist not far from roads, but the forest and wetlands are pristine. During the spring, with high levels of water in the river, Philips found a location where the Eastern Painted Turtles gathered by the hundreds. It was like stumbling upon a land of dinosaurs.
Life on the Farmington 2025 contains 14 fine art images by Mark D Phillips in an 8.5″ x 11″ beautifully printed format expanding to 22″ vertical with a wire bound.
2025 CALENDAR FRONT – Green Heron
JANUARY 2025 – Ice Rings: Almost every year we have good freezes on the river that create cool effects. This one reminded me of a planet and rings.
FEBRUARY 2025 – On the Hunt, Blue Heron: This heron and I have seen each other for three seasons. This was our first season as he waded through the spring droppings in the water.
MARCH 2025 – Stranger Things, Heron and Mannequin: My favorite Blue Heron seems to complete the missing torso of a mannequin perched on a log. I don’t know how it got there, but it vanished over the winter.
APRIL 2025 – Primordial Soup: Hidden in a back bay of Curtis Park, an Eastern Painted Turtle crawls out of the green covered water.
MAY 2025 – The Goslings, Canadian Geese: The babies stuck close to their parents and led me on a merry trip up and down the river as they learned their domain.
JUNE 2025 – The Mushroom Village: Growing on a log in the middle of the river, a village is created by the mushroom caps.
JULY 2025 – Mirror Image: A Nuphar lutea (Yellow pond lily) glows in the morning sunlight.
AUGUST 2025 – Balancing Act: An Eastern Painted Turtle sits precariously on a rock in the sunshine.
SEPTEMBER 2025 – Smell the Flowers: An Eastern Painted Turtle stops at a sprout on a half submerged tree.
OCTOBER 2025 – Fall River Reflections: Fall leaves reflect on the surface of the Farmington River.
NOVEMBER 2025 – On Top of the World: An Eastern Painted Turtle stands guard atop a rocky promontory.
DECEMBER 2025 – My Domain, Blue Heron: A Blue Heron spreads his wings over his domain on the Farmington River.
